gmp FOCUS: Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in China

Architectural affinity and a common language of form and materials give structural unity to the sports facilities of the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, which were built for the 14th FINA World Aquatics Championships: parametrically designed steel constructions that consist of wide-span arches with large triangular elements made of coated aluminum panels. These form identically curved surfaces along two sides of their substructure frames, yielding shapes evocative of windswept sails.
In this volume of the gmp FOCUS series, the project is presented and explained by means of images and plans. In addition, architecture journalist Dirk Meyhöfer comments on the ensemble in a detailed essay.
