Geheimprojekt HafenCity oder
Wie erfindet man einen neuen Stadtteil?
港口城-机密项目 - 一座崭新城区是如何建立的?
Hamburg’s new district holds a secret. Before then-Mayor Voscherau released the construction plan in May 1997, a master plan was already being feverishly constructed behind the scenes. On 280 pages, author Gert Kähler presents the thriller-like story of the origins of HafenCity. It’s a story of political maneuvers by protagonists Peter Dietrich, chairman of HHLA, and Hennig Vorscherau, former First Mayor of the City of Hamburg, and of the situation that had to be confronted at the time. Booming container traffic, the commercial wake-up call from the East following Reunification, and the rekindled love of Hamburg’s citizens for an urban ambiance and lifestyle at the Elbe waterfront made it necessary to build a new container terminal in Altenwerder. Editor Volkwin Marg has been linked with the topic since 1986 when he fought for the preservation of the historic harbor basin, which enabled him – ten years later – to provide an urban design concept.
