Gasteig in Sendling
Topping-out ceremony at modular Philharmonic
From the autumn of 2021, the Gasteig cultural center in Munich will move to an interim venue in Munich Sendling for the duration of the refurbishment phase of its current premises. The topping-out ceremony at the modular Philharmonic for the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the symphony orchestra of the Bayerischer Rundfunk, and many other artists and guest orchestras, takes place on October 15, 2020, marking an important milestone.
The design by gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects for the new Philharmonic and the conversion of hall E to serve as foyer combines an effective modular construction method with a sustainable conversion to meet the requirements of an acoustically demanding concert hall with 1,800 seats.
The external steel structure, which has now been completed and which defines the clear rectangular shape of the new building, will now be fitted out in modular timber construction to create the inside concert hall. The construction uses a push-fit system with solid timber elements, which have been prefabricated while the steel structure was erected and which will be fitted in the coming months. Surrounding the concert hall, between the hall itself and the facade, is an area that will serve as a buffer between the exterior and the hall with its very demanding requirements in terms of climate and acoustics. The chosen construction method is very economical and helps to keep the construction period particularly short.
In addition to the modular concert hall and the conversion of the former transformer building there will be further modular buildings for the interim venue. Their positioning in the urban context and their uniform design language as part of the overall ensemble are based on a design by gmp. The center will have a number of event venues, eateries, and Gasteig institutions such as the Munich Adult Education Center and the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts. Hall E will provide a new home for the Munich Public Library and other central functions.
