Meinhard von Gerkan †
Founding partnerIn 1965, together with Volkwin Marg, Meinhard von Gerkan founded gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects. From 1974 to 2002, von Gerkan held the Chair of Architectural Design at the Technical University of Braunschweig. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Philipps University in Marburg in 2002 and also by Chung Yuan Christian University in 2005. In 2007, the School of Design of East China Normal University in Shanghai awarded von Gerkan an honorary professorship and, from 2014, he was Visiting Professor at Southeast University in Nanjing and Advising Projessor at Tongji University in Shanghai. Von Gerkan was a co-founder of the gmp Foundation and the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac), and received numerous awards, including the Romanian State prize, the Grand Award of the German Association of Architects, the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class, and the Liang Sicheng Prize of the Architectural Society of China. In November 2021, he was appointed Grand Officer of the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Latvia. His best-known projects included Berlin-Tegel Airport, Berlin Main Railway Station, Villa Guna in Jūrmala, Latvia, the Hanoi Museum, the Vietnamese National Assembly Building in Hanoi, the Grand Theater in Chongqing, the reconstruction and renovation of the National Museum of China in Beijing, and the master plan of Lingang New City (today Nanhui New City) near Shanghai.
