Farewell to Hubert Nienhoff and Nikolaus Goetze
With the turn of the year, we bid farewell to two of our long-standing Executive Partners – Hubert Nienhoff and Nikolaus Goetze are concluding their active careers at gmp. With team spirit, creative energy, and a passion for architecture, they have significantly shaped the development of gmp over the decades.
Hubert Nienhoff, a partner at gmp in Berlin since 1993, helped establish this branch of the practice in the 1990s. In collaboration with Volkwin Marg, he was responsible for the design of the New Leipzig Trade Fair and the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, as well as numerous stadiums for the FIFA World Cups in South Africa and Brazil - thus paving the way for new projects on all continents. Other significant projects include the Hans-Sachs-Haus in Gelsenkirchen, the Berlin-Spandau train station, and Berlin Brandenburg Airport and, most recently, the renovation of the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. In the team, he embraced flat hierarchies — focusing on interpersonal relationships and maintaining a good balance of leadership and trust.
Nikolaus Goetze has been Partner at gmp’s Hamburg office since 1996. Together with Meinhard von Gerkan, he played a key role in establishing and leading gmp's activities in Asia. With enormous energy, optimism, and a strong intuition, he has opened the way for us to new countries and many new tasks. His most significant projects include the Hanoi Museum, the Vietnamese National Assembly, and the trade exhibition centers in Nanning and Shenzhen, China. In Germany too, he has contributed numerous city-defining buildings, including the Kunsthalle Mannheim. With his ability to connect and inspire people, he has also mentored and supported new generations of architects at the aac.
With great appreciation, we look at their track record of groundbreaking projects – Hubert Nienhoff and Nikolaus Goetze have made outstanding contributions to architectural culture far beyond Germany's borders. Since its founding in 1965 by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg, gmp has been headed up by a group of partners. This joint leadership model prepares the ground for a smooth succession: in future, the management team will consist of founding partner Volkwin Marg, along with executive partners Stephan Schütz (Berlin), Wei Wu (Shanghai), and Magdalene Weiss (Hamburg).
Last night, Hubert Nienhoff and Nikolaus Goetze were honored and bid farewell during our year-end celebrations in Berlin and Hamburg, recognizing their outstanding contributions. With some heart-felt words and many memories, these were moving moments for everyone. Thank you, Hubert, thank you, Niko!
