Exhibition UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation // Oct 9 - Nov 6, 2024 - Goethe-Institut New York // Oct 18 - 26, 2024 - Architektur Galerie Berlin
In front of and behind the historic facades at Alter Wall 2-32, a new piece of the city has been created in the heart of Hamburg's city center, which ties in with the history of the location. Once part of the fortifications, then a vibrant city boulevard, the street next to the town hall and stock exchange fell into disuse after the Second World War. In 2020, the slumber came to an end: with the opening of stores, cafés, offices and one of the city's most important museums, life returned to the converted, listed building block. The conversion turned the historically grown diversity into a new unity - in the built reality as well as in this book.
Between two book covers, it brings together the perspectives of those involved in the project, the users and those responsible from around ten years of project history. Photo series document important stages of the construction process and the completed building. The richly illustrated book illuminates the entire project from the different perspectives of the client, monument protection, urban planning and architecture against the background of the historical development of this prominent part of Hamburg's city center.
