gmp FOCUS: The Qingdao Grand Theater in China
The Grand Theater is situated in the Laoshan district of Qingdao between the Yellow Sea and Mount Laoshan. The building's form relates to the natural spectacle of the adjacent massif wreathed in clouds: a cloud-like, seemingly floating roof drapes over the four buildings that accomodate the opera house, a concert hall and a multifunctional hall as well as a media center and a hotel.
This volume of the gmp FOCUS series shows the significance of this stage of urban life in the historical context of China’s opera and concert houses. Texts by the architecture critic Christian Brensing and photos by the architecture photographer Christian Gahl present the building in detail.
