gmp FOCUS: The Tianjin Grand Theater in China
The Grand Theater forms the eastern end of Tianjin's cultural park. The shape of its deeply cantilevered roof construction allows the building to enter into a dialog with its architectural surroundings. As a stage for urban life, the building opens up on a plinth via exterior steps to the lake in the center of the cultural park.
In this volume of the gmp FOCUS series, the architects illuminate their design by means of texts and images, and show how syntheses can be created between western and eastern traditions in a highly modern building. The architecture critic Jürgen Tietz discusses the building in a detailed critique.
